We all need to be a little more woke. The evidence is everywhere. When Trumpistanians made “woke” a bad word, we should have all known it was actually the most important word of the 20th century. Simply stated, those fuckers are wrong about everything.
It has become clear in recent weeks that understanding that the cult is intent on making sure we all know that the United States has always been a racist country and if they have their say, we always will be. Imagine turning the word “woke” into a pejorative. Make America Sleep Again.
Compassion, Equality, the Common Good, Wokeness, Critical Thinking are anathema to the cult and clearly they will do all they can to stop good people in their tracks. Make no mistake, Trumpistanians are bad people at their core.
How they manipulate education in the coming years will have decades long consequences for our country and the world. I’ll be honest. I have spent more than a few nights since November lying awake in bed literally crying for my children and grandchildren. I just don’t know how to help. Lisa, my wife, told a friend today that she is especially lost because when she has raised questions and doubts in the past, I was always able to provide some insight on how things might get better. I wasn’t always right…sometimes far from it, but in my own head I could make sense of things. But I can’t anymore and I told her that. And now I’m sure not all of her nights are filled with blissful sleep either.
This became clear enough to me today while walking on Tybee Island out to the old lighthouse built according to the plaque “by enslaved people.” The Georgians who planted that sign seemed almost proud.
Walking through the Fort Pulaski National Park to the lighthouse I saw another sign put up by the National Park Service. This one struck me as another sign at how easy it is to tell lies by just telling part of the truth.
You’ll have to squint a bit, but the sign marks the channel on the Savannah River that leads from the Atlantic Ocean up to the port in Savannah. Here’s the lie of omission: “Historically, ships loaded with cash crops like cotton and rice sailed past this point.” Somehow they forgot to mention the most precious cargo that crawled up that river: people. There would apparently be no beautiful lighthouse without that cargo shipped from the shores of West Africa. How can you possibly talk about the growth of the South without at least giving a wink and a nod towards the millions of humans who built this country while being enslaved?
So I’m woke. And proud to be so.
A few months ago I wrote about a historical marker in Franklin, Tennessee where the local folk decided to claim that the South won the Battle of Franklin, arguably the last important battle of the Civil War during which the traito…er…the Confederates were routed. You can read about that sign here. That was an outright lie and pretty easy to spot..IF YOU”RE WILLING TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU”RE READING. But since Tennessee is in the South, my guess is the education system hasn’t exactly caught up to the 21st Century. Give ‘em time, I guess.
We have a lot of challenges to face in the coming months and years, and frankly I am not sure we’re up for the task. Every single day seems like The Onion is in charge of the country. trump and Musk are intent on raping this country like trump has done so often before…this time with the entire country and not just the many women who undoubtedly spent weeks washing the orange off their private parts. The Dems seem completely inept at doing the simplest thing like STOP VOTING TO CONFIRM NAZIS.
(Damn, my second ALL CAPS rant…maybe Herr Cheeto is rubbing off on me?)
The solution to the crisis facing the country is education, but that seems awfully woke for 2025.
I’m leaving the country for nine months as I seek the peace in my soul to never be able to write like this again. But I’m a long way from there today. I won’t stop pointing out the hypocrisy, racism, and awfulness of the cult, but it’s hard to be effective when more than half the country is fast asleep, seemingly content to ruin the greatest experiment in governing ever conceived by man.
All together now: “Make America Sleep Again.”
